Michael Avara
Avian Lab Manager & Field Coordinator at the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana
Mike Avara is a research scientist in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Illinois. He conducts surveys of breeding birds in Illinois, monitors the Illinois Motus telemetry network to research migrating birds, and bands migratory birds to further the field of avian ecology. The past two years, he has researched Northern Saw-whet Owls at three banding stations in central Illinois—using Motus tags to learn more about their fall/winter stopover behavior and fall/spring migration trajectories.
Join us as we talk about what the Motus network is and how it has expanded and transformed bird migration research in Illinois over the past three years. We’ll talk about the development of this network in the state as well as research projects past, present and future that are utilizing Motus tags to learn more about bird species as different as owls, thrushes, and rails.
