IOS will be hosting its annual August Shorebirding Weekend on August 27th and 28th, within the Emiquon and Chautauqua Refuges. This is one of Illinois’ premier hotspots for migrant shorebirds and is host to numerous shorebirds each season. It’s not uncommon for us to see over 20 species of shorebirds on this trip! In addition to the numerous possibilities of shorebirds, the area also offers a nice assortment of passerines, herons, terns, and waterfowl. We look forward to sharing another weekend with all of you for some great birding! Lunch will be provided at the Dixon Mounds State Museum on Saturday, where we can cool off and relax before we continue birding for the afternoon.
This is a carpooling trip so registrants will be encouraged to carpool from our meeting point Saturday morning at the hotel.
Registration:
$50 for Illinois Ornithological Society members, you must click “Enter Promo Code” and enter your registered email address with IOS in that box to get the discounted tickets.
$85 for non-IOS members.
Included with registration: Lunch and guides for the entire day Saturday, we will have an optional morning trip Sunday for those that want to do a little more birding before heading out.
Accommodations:
Hotel accommodations are NOT INCLUDED. There are a block of rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn, in Pekin, IL (where we will meet to head out Saturday). To get the special rate of $109 a night, folks have to call directly (309-885-7005) and say they are booking for the “IOS Event.” They are holding some rooms with queen beds and some rooms with 2 queen beds, they will be held until Friday, August 12th, or until our block is all reserved.

- Participants will be assigned groups after registration. Please list any other individuals in your group on the ticket registration form so that we can keep groups traveling together in the same groups.
- Field trips will be all-day Saturday, August 27th, and optionally the morning of Sunday, August 28th. Trips will be led by local experts to various locations in and around Chautauqua and Emiquon Wildlife Refuges.
- Groups will all meet at the Hampton Inn and Suites, Pekin, IL at 7 am to carpool to morning birding locations.
- Lunch will be provided at the Dickson Mounds State Museum on Saturday.
- Lodging for this event will be at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Pekin. You may book your rooms for both the 26th and 27th by calling them directly at (309) 885-7005 and letting them know you are booking for the “IOS Event” to book at our special rate of $109 per night. Field trips will start at 7 am on Saturday, so we encourage you to book rooms for both Friday and Saturday evening.
Full itineraries will be provided to everyone prior to the weekend via email, which will include locations of trips, leaders, and contact info for leaders.
