“Taking a Tern for the Worse” is not just an idiom
Brad Semel
Endangered Species Recovery Specialist, Illinois Department of Natural Resources
The common tern (Sterna hirundo) has been listed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a “rare and declining” species in all the states whose shorelines comprise the Great Lakes. It is listed as state-endangered in Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin, and threatened in Michigan and Minnesota. Common terns have consistently nested in Illinois in small numbers and with limited success. The sole remaining active nesting colony is located at the Naval Training Center Great Lakes in Lake County, Illinois. The factors limiting reproductive success of the common tern are universal among all tern species found in Illinois: the susceptibility of nests to predators, the development and recreational use of suitable nesting habitat, and loss of habitat due to invasive exotics. The recovery of terns will be presented in terms of commonality of threats and the focus of conservation efforts.
