and usually last 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Participants can easily depart earlier if
their morning schedules require it.

North Pond Bird Walks
Regular weekly walks emphasize the waves of bird migration
that Chicago experiences throughout
the spring. They’re a great way to see what birds have stopped en route to
nesting grounds up north. Make your own day! See lots of warblers, tanagers,
orioles and grosbeaks before work or school! Well-behaved kids who like birds
and their parents (if they are well-behaved) are very welcome. Bring binoculars
and dress for the weather. The walks start at 7:00am
and usually last 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Participants can easily depart earlier if
their morning schedules require it.
Directions: North Pond is next to the Peggy
Notebaert Nature
Museum on Fullerton
Drive (between Cannon and Stockton) just west of Lake
Shore Drive. Parking is typically available on
northbound Cannon Drive.
The group meets by the Nature Museum,
at the southeast end of North Pond. Look for us on the casting pier at the
south end of the pond or in the museum lobby. Contact: Geoff Williamson

Songs and Calls of Breeding Woodland Birds
at Deer Grove
Forest Preserve
Deer Grove was the first land acquired by the Cook
County Forest Preserve District and the western component is among the larger
tracts of unbroken forest left in the state. We will be focusing on
listening for breeding woodland birds of the preserve and on the
characteristics that differentiate their songs and calls. Birds that have
nested regularly at this location in past years include most of the common
woodland birds plus Cooper's Hawk, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Veery,
Ovenbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Scarlet Tanager, Yellow-throated Vireo, and
sometimes we are surprised with a couple less common species. This will
give you good practice with woodland breeding bird songs and calls of the
area especially if you are planning to do bird monitoring in a similar habitat.
Directions: We will meet at the entrance to Deer Grove west on Dundee
Road about a mile or so west of Quentin
Road and just east of the exit to Rte. 14
Northwest Highway. Turn into the
preserve entrance across from Palatine Stables and meet at the north end of the
parking lot at 7:00 am. Leader: Carolyn Fields c7echoes@aol.com. Hosted by the Chicago Ornithological Society
